On select Fridays I will pose a challenge to you, the reader, to improve your lives and careers in some small way. Do you accept the challenge?
You read it in your inbox. The anger begins to swell. Your fingers move rapidly across the keys as you type your reply. “How dare that person, the no good so and so. I’ll show them a thing or two.”
Your masterpiece is complete. It cuts them to shreds in eight paragraphs worth of rebuttal. Send.
Then it hits you.
“What did I really accomplish by sending that email?” Sure, it felt good to release those emotions while typing it. But, will the recipient read it and think, “He’s right.” Not likely.
Even if you win the argument, it will only harden their resolve to continue until they feel vindicated. They will simply switch tactics and shift the argument. There is no real victory.
On the next opportunity, try a different approach. Write the angry email. But, don’t send it. Writing it will help get the emotions out. Take a break. Rewrite it and try to address the situation without all the emotion.
You will begin to see the other person’s demeanor change. They will likely be more receptive. Patience and restraint will serve you well.
