On select Fridays I will pose a challenge to you, the reader, to improve your lives and careers in some small way. Do you accept the challenge?
A few weeks ago I attended a career fair at our local university. We were looking for some bright, talented undergrads for a paid internship with our company. I would ask the students who were graduating in a few months this question, “May comes. You get your degree, You toss the hot in the air. What’s next?”
Blank stare. Awkward silence. Then some filler words. “Well, I’m not really sure. I think maybe I’ll do….”
I listened closely and nodded. “I get it. That was my answer many years ago. I waited tables and tended bar. Made some money but spun my wheels for the first few years.”
I look back and think of the years my career wandered aimlessly right after college. There were so many things I did not know that I could have learned quickly with the right guidance. I eventually learned them but there is a huge cost to “eventually.”
Want to help the recent graduate in your family? Don’t buy jewelry, or another bauble. Get them the career help they need to succeed. They will thank you forever.
